In East Sussex we have encountered a growing number of examples of AdBlue contamination whereby somebody has put AdBlue straight into their diesel tank. This is in part as a result of people being unsure of the right way to work with it (be aware: it's not a fuel additive), and partly because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are often right near to one another on the car.

Now, what's the problem with having AdBlue in a diesel vehicle? Because AdBlue is mainly deionised water, it is actually nearly as good as pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water really do not blend in any way and attempting to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Apart from this, the urea is seriously corrosive to fuel system hoses and seals and is more prone to crystallisation, damaging injectors and filters.

In case you have put AdBlue in the fuel tank remove it at once. And obviously take care not to crank the vehicle - not even to shift it from the pump. If you did start the car you will most likely need to have the entire fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed out.

Water contaminated fuel

Water contaminated fuel, no matter whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is definitely an important condition to deal with in a car - particularly in modern day common-rail engines. Water inside your petrol or diesel may well result in idling difficulties, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if it is not dealt with effectively, possibly broken injectors.
